Boiler repair in Northfield, B31
Northfield grew from a village on the Bristol Road into one of south-west Birmingham’s largest suburbs, with inter-war semis and terraces, post-war estates and newer infill in between. Plenty of homes here have had the same boiler for a long time, and boilers that are fifteen or twenty years old start to raise a fair question each time they break down: repair it again, or replace it? If yours has stopped, send an enquiry with your postcode and the fault, and we arrange one of our local Gas Safe registered engineers who covers B31.
Should you repair an older boiler?
A repair is often the right call. Many faults on older boilers come down to one worn part, such as a pump, a fan, a diverter valve or an electrode, and replacing it gets years more use from a boiler that is otherwise sound. The engineer weighs up three things with you:
Parts availability. Manufacturers keep making spares for many years after a model ends, and compatible parts exist for many others. When a key part, such as a printed circuit board or a heat exchanger, can no longer be sourced, repair may not be possible.
Recent history. One fault in several years is normal wear. Three or four breakdowns in a winter usually means several parts are near the end together.
Cost against value. A modest repair on a sound boiler is usually worthwhile. A major repair on a boiler with a corroded heat exchanger or a leaking casing may not be.
You will get a price for the repair either way, and the decision is yours.
Which faults do older Northfield boilers show?
Switching off and locking out. Worn sensors, sludged heat exchangers and tired pumps all cause a boiler to start and then stop. Our guide to a boiler that keeps switching off covers the common causes.
Leaks. Seals and valves age. A drip from the pressure relief pipe outside, or water under the boiler, needs looking at promptly. See boiler leaking.
Pilot lights on the oldest boilers. A few homes still have an older boiler with a standing pilot light. If it will not stay lit, a worn thermocouple is the usual cause; see pilot light keeps going out.
Ignition faults on Baxi boilers. Baxi is one of the most common boiler makes in UK homes. E133 means the boiler could not establish a flame; check the gas supply and the condensate pipe before resetting once.
What does the enquiry process look like?
- Send the form with your Northfield postcode, the boiler make, model and rough age, and what is happening.
- We pass it to a local engineer who covers B31, who arranges a visit.
- Diagnosis and a price. The engineer finds the fault, explains the repair and gives a price before starting.
- Check their ID. All gas work is carried out by Gas Safe registered engineers; you can verify the engineer’s card on the Gas Safe Register when they arrive.
Which nearby areas do we cover?
We cover Longbridge, West Heath, Weoley Castle, Bournville, Selly Oak and Quinton, and the rest of south-west Birmingham.
Getting more years from an older boiler
An annual boiler service is the best way to keep an older boiler safe and running, and it gives the engineer a chance to flag parts that are wearing. For typical UK repair prices, see the cost guide.
