What counts as a boiler emergency?
Any situation where you have completely lost heating or hot water, or where there is a risk to safety. Common emergencies include:
- Total loss of heating and hot water, especially with young children or elderly residents at home
- A boiler that keeps cutting out and cannot be reset
- Visible water leaking from the boiler or pipework
- A boiler showing a fault or lockout code that will not clear
- A gas smell or a carbon monoxide alarm: call 0800 111 999 first

- We arrange an engineer
We pass it to one of our Gas Safe registered engineers who covers your area, who gets in touch to arrange the visit. Same-day callouts where available.
- Diagnosis on arrival
The engineer diagnoses the fault and tells you the repair cost before any work is carried out.
- Repair or clear advice
If the repair can be done on the day and you approve the cost, the engineer carries it out. If a part is needed, a follow-up visit is arranged.
Is a frozen condensate pipe an emergency?
It stops the boiler, so it feels like one, but it is often the easiest winter fault to clear. Condensing boilers drain acidic water through a plastic pipe that often runs outside, and in a cold snap it can freeze and lock the boiler out. You can usually thaw the outside section with warm, never boiling, water and then reset the boiler once. Our frozen condensate pipe guide explains the safe way to do it. What should you do while you wait?
If it is safe to do so, turn the boiler off and note any error code on the display, as this helps the engineer arrive prepared. If water is leaking, catch it and keep it away from electrics. In cold weather, keep one room warm with a plug-in heater if you have one. Do not take the boiler casing off: only a Gas Safe registered engineer should work inside a gas boiler.
